Rumours are spreading like wildfire across the party that a power tussle is blowing up - and by as early as the end of this month - outgoing president Abdullah Ahmad Badawi may be ousted by his deputy and incoming president, Najib Abdul Razak, who is due to take over only in March next year.
Former premier Mahathir Mohamad - Najib’s mentor - gave credence to the speculation when he warned in his blog that it was only a tradition, and not compulsory, that the Umno president became the prime minister of the country.
In a posting on his chedet.com blog, Mahathir warned that Abdullah could chose to carry on as premier even after surrendering the Umno presidency to Najib - provided he could garner enough support from other Members of Parliament.
Mahathir’s words were echoed by Gua Musang MP Razaleigh Hamzah, who recently lost to Najib in the contest for the Umno presidency.
“That is his prerogative, he has received the mandate for five years,” said Razaleigh was quoted as saying by The Malaysian Insider news portal.
“He commands the confidence of the majority of the MPs. And the prime minister is appointed by the King and not by the Umno general assembly,” Razaleigh said...read more.
