Umno turns down offer from Pakatan

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Umno has rejected an offer from the state administration for one of its state assemblymen to hold an advisory post in the state's freedom of information committee.

State Umno liaison committee secretary Datuk Azhar Ibrahim said Datuk Arif Shah Omar Shah informed him about being offered the post by the Pakatan Rakyat state government.

He said no Umno member was allowed to hold any position in the Pakatan Rakyat state administration. "This is obviously a political ploy by the state government to weaken Umno unity." Arif said he received the offer letter on Tuesday and sought Azhar's advice. "Although the offer was described as apolitical, I needed to clarify it with the liaison committee."

Arif, the Seberang Jaya assemblyman who lost to opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the recent Permatang Pauh by-election, was approached by state Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Abdul Malik Abul Kassim to provide feedback on ways to enhance the dissemination of information to the public. Malik told him the freedom of information committee was aimed at delivering information to the public using Internet tools, including blogs. In another development, Malik said he would lead a two-day business delegation to Bangkok and southern Thailand to woo investors. - emedia
